A brand new you
Ready for a new image? Stylist Sharon B. Tan shares the basics of fashion to give you the confidence of shopping for a new look
So, now you are ready for a wardrobe overhaul. Whatever your reason may be for wanting to create a new look, the search for new threads can be an amusing activity for some but dreadful for others.
For those who detest shopping for new clothes, there’s no need to feel intimidated if you follow a few guidelines on how to revamp your wardrobe.
If you’re hitting the office, a floral print cotton blouse and a straight-cut pencil skirt will give ladies a very stylish, no-fuss option for busy days.
For the men, a crisp and durable button-up shirt with a solid colour blazer is an absolute necessity and will help you make that stellar first impression.
COLOURS VS PRINTS
For those with a fuller figure, block colours would usually go better than prints. If you absolutely need to select prints, avoid the large prints and horizontal stripes as it could make you look wider than you actually are.
DRESS FOR HEIGHT
To maximise the appearance of height, the trick is to create straight lines. Ladies, go for long pants with vertical stripes that will elongate your figure.
Fellas, your suits should be tailored to fit so it creates a lengthy, oblong shape. Always pair your blazer with pants that are of the same colour to make you look taller.
BACK TO BASICS
Don’t underestimate the flexibility of wardrobe essentials.
My rule of thumb is to splurge slightly on the basics and save, for the most part, on the trends. As a fashion stylist, I keep my styling wardrobe filled with only basic staple pieces such as white-collared dress shirts, clean-cut jackets and black boots. They are perfect for pairing with other trendy items to create numerous different looks.
IT’S OK TO COPY
There are plenty of fashionistas with their own personal style, so find some individuals whose styles work for you and try to learn from them. Take and build on what is relevant to what you are looking for.
KEEP AN OPEN MIND
Lastly, don’t be shy to try on new styles and go with what makes your heart sing.
Just because everyone on Instagram is wearing shredded jeans with doesn’t mean that you have to as well.
Never stop learning and always keep an open mind.
At the end of the day, what we wear should make us feel confident and bold enough to face the day ahead, so don’t sweat over it too much.
